Demystifying the Finnish myth!
After visiting a secondary education school in Helsinki, I have to admit that dazzling as their school facilities may be, along with the funding and the trust the Finnish government shows to education, facts are somehow disappointing.
The methodology and the strategies used in their teaching process are rather unmotivating as the class is teacher- oriented with barely some student interaction in class, as all students sit in row-desk arrangement having a laptop in front of them. Not to mention the fact that although the lesson had already started, students kept coming for at least twenty minutes interrupting the teacher who was always tolerant and smiley. The worst part was that some of them were playing video games on their screens while the teacher explaining some grammar rules. Of course no remarks were made from the teacher’s part as s/he kept doing the talking part.
And I’m wondering: is this educational system a pioneering one? Maybe yes, if someone claims that Finnish students score the best results in Pisa exams.
Finnish are particularly proud of their educational system and there is a lot yet to be expected from them.
